The Shocking Truth About Vitamin D3 & Cancer

The shocking truth is a recent article estimated that 50,000- 70,000 Americans die prematurely from cancer each year due to insufficient intake of vitamin D. Cancer can affect anyone, despite all the research there is still no real cure for it, thus; it is very important to take preventative measures against it, and the best way to accomplish that is to include antioxidants into your everyday diet and vitaminD3 should be the first in your list:) .

Vitamin D3 Benefits

New research indicated that vitamin D3 can help fight cancer, and according to the National Academy of Sciences a daily dose of 1000 IU of vitamin D can reduce colorectal cancer by 50 percent. According to government officials   certain foods such as eggs, milk, liver are fortified with vitamin D and sunlight exposure may help achieve  adequate amount. I totally agree because in the Caribbean where I was born our vitamins and minerals came from natural foods -my mother raised chickens and they used to drop eggs like nobody’s business and the sun was inescapable:

Vitamin D3 Deficiency

Not everyone’s latitude or lifestyle permits adequate sun exposure to make ample amounts of vitamin D, which the skin synthesizes from sunlight. That’s especially true during winter months—one reason the Institute of Medicine, which advises the government on nutrition recommendations, decided on an increase in the suggested daily intake. But given the number of cows that are treated with artificial Growth Hormones and the overuse of Baytril by poultry growers to protect chickens and turkey- experts say that can cause serious health crisis to humans.

And there is no doubt that convenience is a major factor for most of us when it comes to making sustainable dietary shifts or if you suffer from milk allergies or adhere to vegan diet you may be at risk of vitamin D3 deficiency. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 32 percent of children and adults throughout the US were vitamin D deficient and researchers such as Dr. Holick estimated that 50 percent of the general population is at risk. Watch the vitamin D experts in the video below:

The American Academy of Dermatology has reaffirmed that vitamin D should not be obtained from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devices as they may cause damages to our DNA and melanoma or Basal cell carcinoma. These are not safe ways to get vitamin D into your blood:(

Vitamin D deficiency appears to have the greatest impact on cancer rates, but the conflicting reports on it’s supplementation have left many of us unsure of what to do. So burning question is…how to avoid being deficient? Some experts say that vitamin D levels determined how human skin color evolved- which means people with dark complexion need more D because the ( melanin) pigment in skin blocked the UV light. Thus; us black folks have to baked ourselves in the sun everyday an order to reap the benefit of vitamin d3(:

Well, my patients call me sunshine and I like sunny days but sitting in it is a resounding “no”no” however; to keep my D level stress free and to be on the safe side- in addition to consuming  grass fed dairy products- I take vitamin D supplements.  I’m currently taking Arctic Cod Liver D by Nordic Naturals and Viva Lab shown in the picture on the left. I take them interchangeably, because the Cod Liver Oil taste awful. The stakes are high. Inadequate vitamin D levels can increase your risk of dozens of serious health problems, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, and even the common cold and influenza.

Cancer is so prevalent, nowadays it seems like a lot of people are dying from some cancer related diseases. The best way to keep it at bay is to strengthen  our  ‘T lymphocytes to boost our immunity. Though vitamin D3 is of grave importance high level can cause serious side effects such as kidney failure, abnormal heart rhythms, and coma. Ask your doctor for a blood test to determined if you have too much or too little vitamin D and he will recommend the proper dosage.
